A message from SSSI President, Michael Giudici:
Welcome to the Surveying and Spatial Sciences Institute! On behalf of the Board and the Consultative Council, we trust that your membership of our Institute will be rewarding and that you will feel the desire to become involved at your regional, commission, or even Institute level.
The SSSI offers people working across the diverse nature of the surveying and spatial sciences industry a professional home. Whether you work as a remote senser, a photogrammetrist, a cartographer, a GIS consultant, a hydrographic, land or engineering surveyor, you will find your professional and technical needs are catered for. In particular, professional certification is offered or is under development for all commission streams, and a wide range of professional development seminar and conferences are offered annually throughout the regions.
Please browse our website which is currently under redevelopment, and if you see an event or issue that sounds interesting, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our friendly Head Office staff, or alternatively your regional executive officers for more information.
I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible through the course of 2010.
Best Regards,
Michael Giudici
President SSSI
A message from SSSI General Manager, Roger Buckley:
With the merger of SSI and ISA nearing completion it is important to note that SSSI has nearly 3000 members with this number growing daily. 2010 has all the markings of a great year for our industry and this year will see two major conferences that SSSI will be associated with. The XXIV FIG International Congress 2010 being held in Sydney from the 11 – 16 April 2010 www.fig2010.com and the 15 Australian Remote Sensing & Photogrammetry Conference being held in Alice Springs from the 13 – 17 September 2010 www.15.arspc.com both these events will put our industry in the spot light.
During 2010 the major issues that I will be focusing on in SSSI will be the improvement of our Communication and Member Services – I need to ensure that SSSI engages in a proper two-way communication process between SSSI, Members and the Community and based on this focus I have recently appointed a Marketing and Communications Officer at Head Office – Sam Macauley. Over the next few months we will also be focusing our efforts on CPD and to this end I have appointed a National CPD Coordinator – Tamsin Tier who will be developing a national and consistent approach to CPD.
I will be working particularly hard to identify SSSI priorities and directions with the Board and already a number of these have been raised at the Board Planning day held in Sydney recently. Achieving the right balance with this direction, coupled with the competing priorities and resources, pressures from Regions/Commissions and Groups and demands from members, and trying to do the “right thing” for the future sustainability and development of SSSI, may not always be easy, and we need to work together on a partnership model that is sustainable.
I look forward to building on the solid ground that the organisation was created on, providing a mutually beneficial partnership arrangement with our sustaining partners and establishing a sound financial model for sustainable and continued growth. Let me know if there are any things that you think should be a top priority to for us to help SSSI grow in 2010.
Kind regards,
Roger Buckley
General Manager, SSSI
